The power of the collective
Shaju John is a photojournalist and film-maker who has, through his lens, consistently revealed to the world the impact of climate change and human interventions on fragile ecosystems. Through two recent films, Shaju hopes that his future efforts at delving deeper into these environmental issues will receive the widespread support of like-minded people and Nature-lovers everywhere.
“Eye on the Marsh” is a documentary film in progress that focuses on the decades long destruction of the once-thriving Pallikaranai marshland on the outskirts of South Chennai. The film “Eye on the Marsh’’ describes the issue of water bodies vanishing from the cities by undertaking a visual documentation of the Pallikaranai wetland in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This crucial biodiversity zone has all but disappeared over the last 20 years due to the rampant violation of environmental laws by the public and the lack of political will to enforce such legislation. The second film “Wounded Hills” is a detailed micro study on how the impact of climate change has, in recent years, influenced Indian ocean weather systems, with its consequent drastic impact across the Western Ghats. This region has borne the brunt of recurrent monsoon deluges, massive floods and landslides over the last four to five years.
Shaju John wants to see both these films included as study materials for schools and colleges so that the younger generation gets a clear understanding that their future is a consequence of past actions. His wish is that, apart from traditional organizational funding, the making of the films should be a crowd-funded effort that carries the aspirations of thousands of stakeholders, all of whom are deeply invested in preserving the ecological balance of several threatened and vulnerable regions of our country.
These films need financial help along with support in many other forms. Every effort is being taken to ensure that all aspects of the film’s production and audits are aligned with Indian Government’s laws, rules and regulations. When everyone works together, in their own small ways, to achieve an earth-friendly goal, it becomes a force for common good.
